Welcome to Scouting in the Royal Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire)

This website is aimed at providing information about Scouting in the Forest of Dean including details of the various local groups within the Forest of Dean.

View Forest of Dean District in a larger map

The Forest of Dean Scout District is in England, to the West of the River Severn in the south-west corner of Gloucestershire, nestled between the Rivers Wye and Severn.

Scouting has been strong in the district since the early days of the movement and at least one of our Groups has been running non-stop since 1908 even during the years of the two world wars. Several others have been running since the early days too.

The facilities offered to our young people for their time in Scouting within our District are excellent. Many of the Groups have their own HQs and all have teams of dedicated Leaders, good equipment and an environment that allows young people to enjoy themselves and learn in safety which is what Scouting is all about. All the Groups in the District allow Girls as well as boys to join any of the sections.

Not all of the sections within Scouting are catered for in each Group. The individual Group pages provide details of which sections are relevant in each Group. Explorer Scout Units are based in the North and South of the District (Distinguished i.e. “Older” readers may remember these as Venture Scouts). There is a Young Leader Unit with no fixed HQ.

District Camp 2009

Boy Do I Feel Guilty

For some time I've been promising Martin a reference to the District Camp.
Having looked back at the photos I've taken, and the tributes sent to Martin, it should have gone up weeks ago.
Martin, Neal and Gareth, supported by a team of many others, treated us to a fantastic weekend's activities.
Have a look at the video and the tributes. District Camp Page
Perhaps next time all the Groups will attend and we'll have even more activities.
Let's keep building the District.

Kwahadi Tour 2009

Wow!

If you came along to the Dancing on 31 Jul 09 you were treated to a fantastic evening at the Wilderness Centre.
If you didn't, well you missed a spectacular evening of American Indian Dance, meeting and greeting, and sharing in the culture that is native Indian Dance.
Kwahadi were spectacular and, despite the rain doing its best to dampen the spirits, the snug back room in the Wilderness Centre provided an intimate venue to study the regalia and marvel in the dance.
The history, rituals and beliefs associated with the routines was fascinating and provided a memorable accompaniment to a unique event.
The warm-up from the local celtic folk-fusion band "One String Loose" provided excellent entertainment, keep an ear open for them and I defy you not to tap your feet while they're playing.
If you missed it, kick yourself.

Scout Activities

Scouts (including Cubs and Beavers) participate in a range of activities that are specifically geared to the age groups concerned.

Many activities are held indoors although in summer months the emphasis is on activities outside.

The district organises many events, including:

  • Camps
  • Competitions (cooking, backwoods cooking, skills)
  • Area challenges (Archery, air rifle, swimming) etc.
  • St George's Day fun day

Everything we do is supervised and leaders (who are all volunteers) receive ongoing training. Skills specialists provide their expertise as instructors for outdoor pursuits.

All Change

Welcome to Martin Williams our new DC.
Many thanks to Paul for his efforts while holding the reins.
